«»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»Question 8: Why is what Hyakuten Inamoto teaches so different from what Tadao Yamaguchi or you teach? He claims to be a student of Chiyoko Yamaguchi as well.

Answer: I have been hesitating to answer this question in public for ten years, because I did not want to get into the dirty Reiki politics. However, because of my knowledge, I also have a responsibility to share what I know, and now it is time to speak up.
Mr. Inamoto learned only Shoden from Chiyoko Sensei. Apparently out of gratitude for what he received from her, he offered her to answer her English language email enquiries. Since neither Chiyoko Sensei nor Tadao Sensei spoke English they accepted his offer gratefully. But instead of helping the prospective students to meet with Chiyoko Sensei, he told them that Chiyoko Sensei did not speak English, that she mixed her own religious beliefs with Reiki and that he could teach better than her. Since I was still living in Japan at that time, many of those people also wrote to me, asking me what they should see in Japan. I told them what I thought they might like to see and asked them why they travelled to Japan. When they told me that they were training with Mr. Inamoto I asked them in return why they did not study with Chiyoko Sensei? Quite a number of people then forwarded me Mr. Inamoto’s emails…
One day I could not take it any longer. I loved Chiyoko Sensei very dearly and could not believe how one of her own students would do this to her. I talked to my (now) ex- wife and told her that I was going to call Chiyoko Sensei to tell her what was going on. She told me that it was none of my business what is going on between Chiyoko Sensei and her workers, but I disagreed passionately. After a while we did call Chiyoko Sensei. Through my ex, I told her that I had something uncomfortable to tell her and that she should please not mind me meddling with her business. I told her what I shared with you above, during which she kept completely silent. When we were done explaining everything she said, ” I know…you are not the first to tell me. I have asked Mr. Inamoto to come to my house and to sign a paper in which he promises not to teach in my name, because he has no teaching qualification and no teaching permission from me.”
What I have just told you is known by several other people and we do have a video recording of Chiyoko Sensei talking about the issue.
Please don’t misunderstand that I want to mis- credit Mr. Inamoto. What he teaches is probably perfectly good, but it has no relation with Chiyoko Sensei’s teaching and shall not be confused with it.

ReikiDharmaNewsletter Volume# 34, January 1, 2012

Dear friend!
Hello again from your fellow traveler Frank Arjava Petter. Another eventful year has gone by and I trust that you have grown more loving and compassionate in the process. May every moment of this New Year be filled with an overflowing heart.

Last year, about half of my workshops had to be cancelled for various reasons and instead of crying to myself or making my family’s life miserable, I decided to do some things that I always wanted to do, but procrastinated. The first thing I did was to translate my latest book into English, because it seemed impossible to get it published otherwise. This turned out to be a good choice because it will finally be available in March or April from Lotus Press, Wisconsin. It is the culmination of my Reiki work and I am happy that it will soon be available for all of you. German, Spanish, Portuguese, Czech and Dutch editions are either already in print or due soon.

After 25 years I finally learned to play guitar and this has been a lot of fun, except for my family… who had to listen to the same chords over and over again. But on the other hand this has added some playfulness and relaxation to my life that I gratefully welcome.

And, recently I began to clean up our environment. Too many of my Greek friends seem to have a habit of throwing their garbage out of the windows of their cars, and our main road looked more like a garbage dump than a country road. One day I just could not take it anymore, bought a load of garbage bags and went to work. You cannot imagine the amount of garbage that I collected over a period of two weeks and you may wonder why I am telling you this. Collecting other people’s garbage had a profound impact on me. It was difficult to collect “other people’s” garbage so I thought of the garbage as my own. Soon I recognized the same dynamic in the inner world. If I give the responsibility for my suffering to my parents, the society or god knows whom, I am bound to suffer infinitely. So, as an exercise for the New Year I suggest that you look inside yourself with great courage and deep love and take utmost responsibility for who and what you are. Please don’t look at your self with the attitude of “ might as well accept myself since I cannot change it anyway”, but with an attitude of compassion and celebration. And then end your suffering- it is enough!

In terms of our Reiki practice, there are certain issues that call for cleansing and I would like to address them below. Looking back at my workshops and correspondence of 2011 there are questions that seem to keep coming back out of the closets again and again.

Lets begin with the practical questions.

Question 1: How do I treat someone with cancer? Is it ok to place my hands directly upon the afflicted body part? Does the cancer grow when the body receives energy?

Answer: Reiki is pro life and is always good for your client. I have never come across a case where Reiki was not good, not safe and not recommended. First of all please know that the body heals itself: it is neither you nor me nor some great technique that heals the body. When the natural equilibrium in the body is out of sync and there is not enough energy to eliminate accumulated toxins, those toxins increase until the body becomes sick. When the client receives Reiki, the body is energized and it uses this energy to detoxify. If this detoxifying process is “in time” the body will then heal itself… And if it is not… perhaps a little divine intervention will do the job!

So, there is no need to worry about giving Reiki under any circumstances, it is always helpful. The only time when a Reiki treatment or a series of treatments should be carefully monitored is if the client takes strong medication for a specific ailment. In this case he must have the right dose of medication set by his physician, because the Reiki treatments may alter the way that the body detoxifies. Keep in mind that the Reiki detoxifies the body, and not the medication…

There are no rules in Reiki and I suppose that every one of us finds her own way of working. When treating cancer there are two ways of going about it. Perhaps you want to treat the area around the tumor first, to make sure that the surrounding tissue is healthy. In healthy tissue the cancer cannot spread and will thus be contained. On the other hand it is ok to treat the afflicted part immediately, helping the body to detoxify what is has so skillfully contained in one place. Please begin to look at any kind of illness with love and compassion. The body is not stupid, but instead tries to keep itself alive as long as possible. An illness is a (n unenlightened) way of the body to stay alive!!!

My teacher, Chiyoko Yamaguchi suggested to us to treat someone who is seriously ill at least for three month on a daily basis for a minimum of 60 minutes. In this case she said
“ More (or longer) helps more!”

Question 2: Is it good to give Reiki during pregnancy?

Answer: As mentioned above, Reiki is always good and daily Reiki treatments during the pregnancy are the most beautiful gift you can give to mother and child. Both of our kids received Reiki every single day of the pregnancy and you should come and visit us some day to see the result! In any case, don’t stop the Reiki treatments when the children are born. One of the previous presidents of the Usui Reiki Ryoho Gakkai, Mrs. Koyama, said that children become good human beings if you treat their heads frequently.
There are two reasons why many of us have learned not to treat an unborn child. The first reason is to avoid possible legal issues. In the first few months the mother sometimes looses her baby for an unknown reason (the two bodies test run all the systems and if something is not quite right with the baby or the life of the mother is in danger, a natural miscarriage will occur). The unknown is hard for us to bear and therefore the parents may look for a reason for the miscarriage. If no reason is found, perhaps it could be a fault of the Reiki treatment she received… To avoid this potential problem, ask the pregnant lady to get the consent of her physician before you begin the treatments.

The second reason is really silly: it is because you don’t have the baby’s consent. This philosophy stems from our Western obsession with the personal freedom of the individual self which in Asian culture and religion has no place whatsoever. The mother does not need to ask her baby whether it will be steak or soy sausage for lunch either. Reiki is good for the child, and that is all that counts.

Question 3: Do I need the receiver’s permission for distant Reiki?

Answer: What we talked about above is essentially true for distant treatments as well. Personal freedom seems to be our highest value, but in Buddhist countries this does not make much sense. The ego is seen as the only thing that has no substance at all. All there is- is oneness- ahhh, beautiful. From this point of view you can treat someone distantly without his consent, because the Reiki is good for him/her. Perhaps it helps to see distant treatments the same way you look at a normal treatment. If you offer someone a treatment for his headache and he refuses, are you going to knock him unconscious and force the Reiki on him? When someone does not want to be treated, don’t waste your time- unless you feel that it is your responsibility to do it. In this case the meaning of the word responsibility is: response- ability: you do what needs to be done!

Another issue I personally find important- even though it is not absolutely necessary for the healing to be successful- is the participation of the client. If the client participates in his own healing process actively, chances for improvement are better on all levels.

Question 4: What do you think of sending Reiki to a crisis/disaster area?

Answer: Your concern comes out of the kindness of your heart and therefore it is a good thing. However, Reiki is meant for healing and for the giver to watch the healing process of his client. How would you possibly do this with a thousand people that you do not know? Therefore my suggestion is to work on one person at a time. If you can help one person, that’s just great, well done! For now, forget about healing the whole world.

Question 5: Is it ok for the giver /receiver to wear jewelry, or to cross hands or feet during a treatment?

Answer: No problem. Reiki is everywhere, it passes through everything and it loves Yoga postures. Even if you cross your legs over your head, Reiki will come out and pass through every cell of your body unobstructedly.

Question 6: Do you use the Reiki Master symbol in traditional Reiki?

Answer: In traditional Reiki this symbol does not exist and there is no need for a “master symbol” because the title “master” is not used. What is used instead is the title “Shihan”, which means teacher/instructor and has strictly technical connotations.
The so- called master symbol is and was neither used by the Usui Reiki Ryoho Gakkai, nor in the Hayashi Reiki Institute. I showed the symbol to one of the six Shihans of the Usui Reiki Ryoho Gakkai, Ogawa Sensei in 1995, and he had never seen it. Later on Chiyoko Sensei confirmed the same. Hayashi Sensei did not teach it.

It is possible that the master symbol was introduced to Reiki by Iris Ishikuro Sensei, a cousin of Takata Sensei who was a member of the Johre fellowship. Originally the symbol is a Zen Buddhist term and is widely used in Japanese spirituality, but as I said earlier it has no relevance in Reiki.

Question 7: Is Hiroshi Doi a Shihan (teacher) of the Usui Reiki Ryoho Gakkai?

Answer: No he is not, and he does not claim to be. What he teaches is Gendai Reiki (contemporary Reiki) and it has no relation to what is taught in the Usui Reiki Ryoho Gakkai. Doi Sensei learned Reiki one and two through The Radiance Technique ® and got the teacher’s training from a student of one of my Japanese students. In the Usui Reiki Ryoho Gakkai only the president is permitted to teach another teacher. Also their Shihans are only permitted to teach within the association and never outside.

Question 8: Why is what Hyakuten Inamoto teaches so different from what Tadao Yamaguchi or you teach? He claims to be a student of Chiyoko Yamaguchi as well.

Answer: I have been hesitating to answer this question in public for ten years, because I did not want to get into the dirty Reiki politics. However, because of my knowledge, I also have a responsibility to share what I know, and now it is time to speak up.
Mr. Inamoto learned only Shoden from Chiyoko Sensei. Apparently out of gratitude for what he received from her, he offered her to answer her English language email enquiries. One day I could not take it any longer. I loved Chiyoko Sensei very dearly and could not believe how one of her own students would do this to her. Please don’t misunderstand that I want to mis- credit Mr. Inamoto. What he teaches is probably perfectly good, but it has no relation with Chiyoko Sensei’s teaching and shall not be confused with it.

Question 9: There are so many Reiki schools and lineages. What do you think about them? Why haven’t you started your own system?

Answer: I think that we can do without most of what is being offered on the “Reiki Market” because most of it is just that: a market with products. A couple of years ago I was asked this question in Athens at a Reiki Conference and before I could stop myself, I answered, “ Mine is bigger than yours…” Personally I don’t see a point in adding another new form of Reiki to the confusion because I think that trying to improve upon “soul energy”- Reiki- is quite inappropriate. Lets be respectful instead to what we have been given by Usui Sensei and those who carried the torch after him. In the simplicity of the teaching lies its greatest charm.

If properly initiated, what comes out of our hands is all the same: pure and uncontaminated cosmic energy. That energy has no attributes and is strictly supra- personal. And that is the beauty of it- lets keep it that way!

Question 10: What do you think of distant attunements?

Answer: Transformation happens in the presence of the teacher. If the teacher is able to be present even though he is far away or even dead… why not. In the Buddhist tradition this is often the case. But, please… is this s a skill that you have acquired? I certainly haven’t and therefore I do my attunements in person.

Another point is equally important. A teacher should have learned to know when the attunement is done, when the soul energy in his student is switched on. To know when this is done beyond doubt (for an unenlightened soul like me) is possible only in person, here and now.

Question 11: What do you think will happen in 2012?

Answer: The end of the world is near, ha ha. I am neither a fan of horror scenarios, nor one of milk and honey- magic.
Nothing different is going to happen, because you are always the same. Instead of being afraid of the future, or hoping that some cosmic benediction is going to end your misery, focus on what you have: this moment. Be present and enjoy whatever happens to you, inside of you and in your environment. Find the beauty in the small things of life and be grateful.
Last spring one of my closest friends died in a motorcycle accident and this shook me deeply. Just after I heard about it I found myself on a severely bumpy airplane ride and looked back at my life. What would I like to be remembered for? For my fame as a well- known Reiki teacher, my books, anything that I did or did not do? My conclusion was simple and humbling. I realized that the only thing that matters to me is that there is love in my heart. This love is not mine and even this heart is just borrowed from the Universe. This love is not directed at anyone or anything: it is simply there. In this light forget about past and future and let love flow…
Thank you for listening to me, with love and gratitude from beautiful Greece, your friend, Frank Arjava Petter
